Last week, I discussed the steps to pivot into a Business Events Planner to start the New Year. This information will be helpful to you as you plan to enter this exciting new career.
Usually, we set goals to achieve this. However, I saw a quote on Instagram that says, “We set systems, not goals. And oh… that makes sense!”
Strangely, we’re always setting goals (which is good, don’t get me wrong), but we forget that to see the result of our goals, it needs to be worked on, and that is where “systems” come in. Thus, I intend to “focus” on the system this year. I know I unconsciously did this in the past, but this year, I have to put my intention on ensuring that I have put whatever will work for me on the system. This should be the same for you, too, as you are working on setting your goals for whatever you plan to achieve this year.
In my journey, I once set a goal to become a Certified Incentive Travel Specialist. While the goal motivated me, what truly helped was the system I created: dedicating 30 minutes every morning to studying and blocking time each week to research certification programs. That system carried me through the process with clarity and less stress.”
Introduction
Do you ever feel like your goals sit on paper, collecting dust? You’re not alone. Many aspiring Business Event Planners set ambitious goals but struggle to turn them into reality. Here’s the secret: it’s not about the goals but the systems you create to achieve them.
I’ve outlined some guides to help you take your first steps toward building simple, effective systems that will keep you moving forward, no matter where you are on your journey. Are you ready to start seeing results?
Step 1: Define Your Goal
Before building your system, you need a clear goal. Think of this as your destination. Be specific:
- Example: Instead of saying, “I want to become a Business Event Planner,” set a goal like, “I will secure my first client within six months.”
Action:
Write down your goal in one sentence. Make it measurable and time-bound
Step 2: Break Down Your Goal into Micro-Actions
To achieve your goals, it’s important to establish systems built on consistent and repeatable actions. Start by breaking your goal into small, manageable tasks that you complete daily, weekly or monthly.
Example: If your goal is to secure your first client:
Daily : Spend 15 minutes researching potential clients
Weekly: Reach out to three potential clients via email or LinkedIn.
Monthly: attend one networking event or webinar
- Attend one networking event or webinar.
Action:
List 3-5 small actions you can take regularly to move closer to your goal.
Step 3: Create Your System
A system is the structure that keeps your micro-actions on track. Think of it as your game plan. Use planners, apps (Trello, Asana, or Google Calendar), or simple pen and paper to organize your tasks.
Example System:
- Morning Routine: Spend 15 minutes researching clients.
- Midweek Task: Block one hour every Wednesday to write and send emails.
- End-of-Month Review: Assess progress and adjust actions as needed.
Action:
Choose one tool to organize your system and commit to using it for 30 days.
Based on my experience, when I was starting off, and this was pre social media era, we just had email ( thank God for this , a substantial saving instead of sending an actual mail) Initially it might seem futile, this will not happen immediately; you just have to keep on it, and bingo!! One day I received an inquiry from all those email that I that would not work, it was an inquiry that was one of the first business that generated a six figure business and several more projects and referrals from just this one email. I want to make a point that , what ever you put out there that you might feel frustrated and is not working, is actually bearing fruits underneath, I just initially did not see it.
Step 4: Track Your Progress
Tracking progress keeps you motivated and helps you identify what’s working. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Check off completed tasks or reflect on your wins weekly.
Action:
Use a habit tracker, checklist, or journal to log your actions. Write down one thing you accomplished this week.
Step 5: Celebrate Small Wins
Every step forward is a victory. Celebrating small wins keeps your energy high and your momentum strong. For example, if you get a positive response from a potential client, treat yourself to something small—a coffee, a walk in the park, or a new notebook.
How Building a System Turned a Five-Figure Deal Into a Six-Figure Success
When I was starting, it was during the pre-social media era. Back then, email was our primary communication tool (thank goodness for that—it saved a fortune compared to sending actual mail!). Initially, it often felt like I was shouting into the void. The results didn’t come overnight, and it was easy to feel like all the effort wasn’t making a difference.
But I had a system in place. I stayed consistent with my outreach, even when it seemed like nothing was happening. Then, one day—bingo!—I received an inquiry from one of those emails I thought wouldn’t lead anywhere. That single email turned into one of my first five-figure deals. It also led to several more projects and referrals, all from that one connection.
Here’s the takeaway: having a system is what kept me going. Even when you feel like your efforts are going unnoticed or you’re not seeing immediate results, trust that the system you’ve built is working. The seeds you’re planting are taking root beneath the surface. Success doesn’t always show up immediately, but the work you’re putting in consistently through a system makes a difference, even if you can’t see it yet. Stick with it—persistence paired with a solid system is a game-changer.
Why Systems Work: A Quick Recap
Goals are your destination, but systems are the vehicle that gets you there. You’ll achieve more with less stress by focusing on consistent, actionable steps. Start small, stay consistent, and watch your progress unfold.
