Blog # 39: Thriving, Not Just Surviving : My Wellness Blueprint as a Business Event Planner

As a Business Event Planner, my schedule can be unpredictable, filled with back-to-back meetings, site inspections, and high-pressure deadlines. Getting caught up in the whirlwind of logistics, client expectations, and last-minute changes is easy. However, I’ve learned that prioritising my health and well-being is essential to sustaining my energy, focus, and creativity in this demanding industry. Over the years, I’ve developed a set of wellness habits that help me stay physically and mentally grounded. In this blog, I’m sharing my strategies in the hope that they inspire fellow event professionals to take better care of themselves, too.

1. Starting and Ending the Day with Meditation

Mornings and evenings set the tone for balance and relaxation, and I’ve found that practising meditation twice a day—20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening—helps me cultivate a sense of calm. This practice allows me to clear my mind, reset my energy, and approach challenges with clarity. Meditation has helped me manage stress better, stay present during meetings, and make mindful decisions instead of reacting impulsively to challenges.

2. Yoga or Pilates for Strength and Flexibility

Movement is a non-negotiable part of my wellness routine. I alternate between yoga and Pilates in the mornings, which help me maintain flexibility, core strength, and posture—essential for long days spent standing at events or sitting for hours on a laptop. These workouts build physical resilience and serve as a mental reset, allowing me to step away from the chaos and focus on my body and breathing. I always feel more energised and centred after a good session, which improves my productivity throughout the day.

3. Eating Healthy (Most of the Time!)

Let’s be honest—eating healthy while managing business events can be a challenge! From client dinners to on-the-go meals, making nutritious choices isn’t always easy. However, I do my best to incorporate wholesome meals whenever possible. I aim for balanced meals with plenty of vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Hydration is key, so I drink enough water throughout the day. While I do indulge occasionally (hello, post-event comfort food!), I try to maintain a diet that fuels my body and mind for the demands of my profession.

4. Digital Detox: Reducing Screen Time and Mindful News Consumption

Social media and excessive screen time can be draining, especially when juggling multiple platforms for event promotion, client communication, and industry updates. I’ve learned to be intentional about my screen time by setting boundaries and taking regular breaks. I also limit my exposure to negative news, as consuming too much can impact my mood and energy levels. Instead, I focus on uplifting, educational, or inspiring content that contributes positively to my mindset and productivity.

5. Daily Walks with My Chocolate Lab

One of the best things about having a dog is that she forces me to step away from my work and get outside! When I’m not swamped with event projects, I prioritise taking my chocolate Labrador for a walk twice a day—once in the morning and once in the evening. These walks are not just for her but for me, too. They allow me to breathe fresh air, clear my mind, and get some movement in. After all, sitting for long periods is now considered the “new smoking,” which is a wake-up call to incorporate more movement into our daily routines.

6. Prioritizing Rest and Recovery

Burnout is a genuine concern in the Business Events industry, where the pace is often relentless. That’s why I make sleep and rest non-negotiable. Even during peak event seasons, I ensure I get enough sleep to recharge. Quality rest boosts my concentration, decision-making, and overall resilience. I also practice self-care by setting aside time for activities I enjoy, whether reading, listening to music, or simply unwinding with my dog.

Final Thoughts: Wellness as a Long-Term Investment

Taking care of ourselves as Business Event Planners isn’t just about feeling good—it’s about sustainability. This industry demands a lot, but prioritising well-being can enhance our performance, creativity, and longevity. I encourage you to take small, intentional steps toward a healthier lifestyle—your body and mind will thank you.
