#28: The Long Game: My Journey at Trade Shows in the MICE Industry

When I first stepped into a MICE trade show years ago, I remember thinking: “Is this really worth all the time, money, and effort?” I had my brochures ready, my elevator pitch rehearsed, and butterflies in my stomach. I walked away with a stack of business cards… and zero immediate sales.

But you know what? That first show planted seeds I didn’t even realise were growing.

Over the years, trade shows became one of the most powerful tools for building visibility, creating trust, and unlocking long-term partnerships. They weren’t a silver bullet—but they were the start of something meaningful. Let me share what I’ve learned along the way.

Trade Shows Are About Visibility, Not Just Sales

In the MICE world, trade shows are your chance to put your brand in front of real decision-makers and trusted partners. It’s tempting to focus on “Did I close any deals?” but often the true ROI shows up later—sometimes months or even years down the road.

I’ve had corporate clients who circled back after a year—just because they remembered that one genuine conversation we had. Relationships first. Revenue second.

Real Connections Build Real Results

One of my favourite stories comes from a show where a partner asked to share a table with me. We split the costs and took turns pitching our services. That collaboration led to an incredible referral chain, just because they saw how I worked and what I stood for. No hard sell. Just trust, alignment, and clarity.

And yes, some of my best partnerships started with the person next to me, not necessarily the people I planned to meet.

What I’ve Learned from 25+ Trade Shows

Over time, I’ve learned that trade shows aren’t about collecting the most business cards—they’re about showing up with intention, building credibility, and following through with consistency. The wins don’t always come quickly, but the ones that last are worth the wait.

So… Was It Worth It?

Absolutely. But not for the quick wins.

Trade shows helped me build my brand from the ground up. They created visibility, strengthened my credibility, and taught me how to nurture relationships that matter. Today, I go in with a long-game mindset—knowing that the best outcomes often bloom over time.
