When the world shifted to Zoom, I did too.
Gone were the business trips to Iceland, Barcelona, and Rome.
Gone were the conference badges, the backstage energy, the pre-event butterflies.
Instead… I was in my PJs at 2am, bleary-eyed, trying to stay focused on a virtual global meeting.
Sound familiar?
Online platforms absolutely had their moment — and for good reason.
We kept going. We stayed safe. We stayed connected.
But here’s what we also lost:
✨ The magic of the hallway conversation.
✨ The handshake before a keynote.
✨ The energy that only comes from being in the room.
What Virtual Did Well
Don’t get me wrong — virtual platforms gave us:
- Accessibility from anywhere in the world
- Big savings on travel and venues
- Flexibility to watch sessions on demand
For a while, it worked. And for some things? It still does.
But in Business Events, connection isn’t just a feature — it’s the foundation.
What We Missed
Here’s what virtual couldn’t quite replicate:
- Spontaneous networking (those “accidental genius” moments)
- Sensory engagement (ambience, lighting, sound, vibe)
- Deep trust-building (Zoom smiles don’t quite seal a deal)
Attendees multitasked. Speakers missed eye contact.
And don’t even get me started on Wi-Fi.!!!
Where Do We Go From Here?
The answer isn’t to abandon tech.
It’s to blend it with what we know works: human connection.
💡 Hybrid is here to stay — and planners who understand both worlds will lead the future.
